Frederic Delmar Whitney returned to his loving Heavenly Father on September 5, 2018, after a valiant battle with bladder cancer. Fred was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on January 28, 1940, to Leonard and Frances Whitney. He was the third of nine children. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on May 23, 1956, along with his parents and four siblings. Fred’s membership in the church would form the foundation for how he lived his life. He served a mission to the Eastern States mission from 1960-62, serving under President and Sister Gerald Smith. Upon his return, he attended BYU. He met his sweetheart, Lois C. Moore on a blind date and knew she was the girl of his dreams. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and celebrated 55 years of marriage this September. Fred and Lois were blessed with seven children.
Fred’s career in Sales took them to California, Utah, Colorado and back to Utah again. While living in Colorado, Fred served as Bishop of the Northglen 2nd ward. Fred traveled frequently so life was busy but happy. In 1982, he accepted a job in Salt Lake and moved the family to Fruit Heights, where they would raise their family. In 1995, Fred and Lois were called to serve in the beautiful new Bountiful LDS temple, where they faithfully served for many years. After their youngest finished High School, they moved to Eaglewood in North Salt Lake in 1997. They loved the neighborhood and the close proximity to temples, the airport, and golfing. He enjoyed working in their beautiful backyard and on the stream Lois surprised him with while he was away on business. He loved visiting with neighbors and was the unofficial greeter each Sunday before church.
After retiring, Fred and Lois served a mission in Public Affairs in the Toronto, Canada East and West Missions, serving with President and Sister Allen Ashton and President and Sister Tad Callister. They loved their mission and the people of Canada. Fred permanently added the word “Eh”, pronounced “A”, to his vocabulary.
Fred and Lois moved to Saratoga Springs in 2013. They were blessed to serve at the Provo Missionary Training Center. This was a short assignment as they were called as full-time missionaries to serve as Member Leader Support (MLS) Missionaries in their own stake. They served 13 months in the Utah Provo Mission under President and Sister John McCune and 5 months in the newly formed Utah Orem Mission under President and Sister Chris Killpack. They lived at home while serving in their ward and stake. Fred also had the opportunity to serve in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.
Fred and Lois loved to travel and meet people. They have a 5th wheel and loved traveling through every state, often staying for extended periods of time in their favorite locations. Wherever they stayed, Fred would take time to meet everyone around them, knowing their life story before the end of the first night. He loved people and people loved him. Even in his last few months of living in a care center, he knew and loved all of his caregivers. He was a good listener and a great story teller. He lived each day to the fullest, starting each day with exercise and never missing an opportunity to shake a hand or wrap someone in a bear hug and tell them he loved them.
Fred is survived by his eternal companion and sweetheart of 55 years, Lois Whitney, seven children, Jeana (Robert) Stockdale, Kaysville, UT; Teresa (Stephan) Sato, Kaysville, UT; Paul (Shelia) Whitney, Layton, UT; David (Jennifer) Whitney, West Point, UT; Tiffany (Brandon) Green, Idaho Falls, ID; Julie (Matt) Mitchell, Salem, UT; Debra (Jeff) Coburn, Louisville, KY.
