In Memoriam - October 12, 2018 - Sid Paulson

Sidney C Paulson
1943~2018
Holladay, UT-Sidney C Paulson, 75, from Holladay, Utah passed away unexpectedly on October 12, 2018 while serving as president of the Regina Saskatchewan Temple. He was born in Murray, Utah on April 4, 1943 to Fred and Theresa Paulson. From a young age, Sid enjoyed participating and competing in a variety of sports. Sid loved his country and his church. As a young man, he served in the United States Coast Guard and labored as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Great Lakes Mission.
In 1968, Sid met and began courting Judy Ostvig as they served together in the Brigham Young University 53rd ward. On August 15, 1969, Sid and Judy were married in the Salt Lake Temple. Both Sid and Judy anticipated this day with great excitement. Throughout their 49 years of marriage, Sid was a loving, caring, and attentive husband.
Sid will be remembered as a man of integrity, discipline, determination, purpose, and sound judgment. These characteristics led many to seek his advice, and his wise counsel continues to bless many lives. Sid cherished the relationships he developed during his successful career in the insurance and healthcare industry. Sid's career began at Galbraith and Green, then transitioned to Alta Health Strategies, and finally to SelectHealth. In 2009, while employed as President and CEO of SelectHealth, Sid received a call to serve as president of the Canada Winnipeg Mission. His decision to retire from a job he loved was evidence of his faith and commitment to the Lord. Sid felt the greatest blessing of the mission was working daily with Judy alongside the devoted missionaries.
One of Sid's fondest joys was spending time at home with family and friends. His children and grandchildren will miss rounds of golf, Sid's special raspberry shakes, stories of Raggylug the cottontail rabbit, and watching BYU games.
In 2015, Sid was called to return to Canada, this time as the president of the Regina Saskatchewan Temple. The thought of leaving home once again was difficult for Sid; however, his strict obedience and desire to serve the Lord prevailed. He appreciated the love of the Savior and profound peace he felt as he served in the temple. The eternal effect of Sid's life-long commitment to serve will influence countless lives for the better.
Sid is preceded in death by his father, Fred Martell Paulson, and his mother, Theresa Cornum Paulson. He is survived by his wife, Judy Ostvig Paulson; their children Bret (Stephanie), Craig (Kristen), Natalie Smith (Shane), Nicole; twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild; siblings Alice Flake (Ken), Fred (Linda), Max (Jeanne), Christie Hansen (Verne), and Scott. Memorial service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. in the Holladay South Stake Center, 4917 Viewmont Street, Holladay, Utah. Family and friends may pay their respects at a viewing on Sunday, October 21st from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. or on Monday, October 22nd from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., also at the Holladay South Stake Center. Interment at Memorial Holladay Cemetery and burial services provided by Memorial Holladay-Cottonwood Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the academic and athletic endowment Sid and Judy established at BYU by calling 801-422-2583.

In Memoriam - September 5, 2018 - Fred Whitney

Frederic Delmar Whitney returned to his loving Heavenly Father on September 5, 2018, after a valiant battle with bladder cancer. Fred was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on January 28, 1940, to Leonard and Frances Whitney. He was the third of nine children. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on May 23, 1956, along with his parents and four siblings. Fred’s membership in the church would form the foundation for how he lived his life. He served a mission to the Eastern States mission from 1960-62, serving under President and Sister Gerald Smith. Upon his return, he attended BYU. He met his sweetheart, Lois C. Moore on a blind date and knew she was the girl of his dreams. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and celebrated 55 years of marriage this September. Fred and Lois were blessed with seven children.

Fred’s career in Sales took them to California, Utah, Colorado and back to Utah again. While living in Colorado, Fred served as Bishop of the Northglen 2nd ward. Fred traveled frequently so life was busy but happy. In 1982, he accepted a job in Salt Lake and moved the family to Fruit Heights, where they would raise their family. In 1995, Fred and Lois were called to serve in the beautiful new Bountiful LDS temple, where they faithfully served for many years. After their youngest finished High School, they moved to Eaglewood in North Salt Lake in 1997. They loved the neighborhood and the close proximity to temples, the airport, and golfing. He enjoyed working in their beautiful backyard and on the stream Lois surprised him with while he was away on business. He loved visiting with neighbors and was the unofficial greeter each Sunday before church.

After retiring, Fred and Lois served a mission in Public Affairs in the Toronto, Canada East and West Missions, serving with President and Sister Allen Ashton and President and Sister Tad Callister. They loved their mission and the people of Canada. Fred permanently added the word “Eh”, pronounced “A”, to his vocabulary.

Fred and Lois moved to Saratoga Springs in 2013. They were blessed to serve at the Provo Missionary Training Center. This was a short assignment as they were called as full-time missionaries to serve as Member Leader Support (MLS) Missionaries in their own stake. They served 13 months in the Utah Provo Mission under President and Sister John McCune and 5 months in the newly formed Utah Orem Mission under President and Sister Chris Killpack. They lived at home while serving in their ward and stake. Fred also had the opportunity to serve in the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.

Fred and Lois loved to travel and meet people. They have a 5th wheel and loved traveling through every state, often staying for extended periods of time in their favorite locations. Wherever they stayed, Fred would take time to meet everyone around them, knowing their life story before the end of the first night. He loved people and people loved him. Even in his last few months of living in a care center, he knew and loved all of his caregivers. He was a good listener and a great story teller. He lived each day to the fullest, starting each day with exercise and never missing an opportunity to shake a hand or wrap someone in a bear hug and tell them he loved them.

Fred is survived by his eternal companion and sweetheart of 55 years, Lois Whitney, seven children, Jeana (Robert) Stockdale, Kaysville, UT; Teresa (Stephan) Sato, Kaysville, UT; Paul (Shelia) Whitney, Layton, UT; David (Jennifer) Whitney, West Point, UT; Tiffany (Brandon) Green, Idaho Falls, ID; Julie (Matt) Mitchell, Salem, UT; Debra (Jeff) Coburn, Louisville, KY. Fred is also survived by a rapidly growing posterity with twenty-five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Siblings: Leonard, (Deanna) Whitney, Eagle Mountain, UT; Judy Wright, Thatcher, AZ; Howard (Diane) Whitney, Rexburg, ID; Larry (Irene) Whitney, Wichita Falls, TX; Lori (Brent) Henningson, Higley, AZ; Hal (Janie) Whitney, Parker, CO; John (Arlene) Whitney, Gilbert, AZ.

He is preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Sylvia Stofferahn, brother-in-law, Curtis Wright, and sister-in-law, Joni Whitney. He will be missed by all; As one ward member wrote, “I miss those cold, but oh so warm, handshakes every Sunday!”

The family would like to thank the staffs of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Harmony Hills Care Center and Hospice who helped during his time of need.

Funeral services will be held Monday, September 17, 2018, at 12:00 PM in the Saratoga Springs South Stake Center, 2947 S. Swainson Ave, Saratoga Springs, UT. Viewings will be held Sunday evening (16th) from 6:00-8:00 PM at Wing Mortuary, 118 E. Main St, Lehi, Utah, and from 10:30-11:45 AM prior to the services. Interment will be in the Lehi City Cemetery on land previously owned by Lois’ family. He spent many hours taking water turns on the very ground of his final resting place.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Missionary Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints or to your favorite charity.

In Memoriam - May 15, 2013 R. Sterling Spafford

July 19, 1931 ~ May 15, 2013

St. George, Utah-Reed Sterling Spafford passed peacefully May 15, 2013 in St. George, Utah, following a decline in health over the past year. Through it all, and typical of his entire life, he persevered with a positive mental attitude.

He was born in Pocatello, Idaho on July 19, 1931 to Reed Spafford and Samantha Leona Reynolds. He attended schools in Salt Lake City, graduating from South High School (1948) and taking his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the University of Utah (1956). He married Marilyn Fowles in the Salt Lake Temple on December 28, 1953.

He will be fondly remembered for his service to church, community and family. A life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, he served in multiple callings. He served a proselyting mission in the Great Lakes Mission (1951-1953). He served in bishoprics, on the High Council and in the Stake Presidency of the Monument Park Stake (1974-1984). He was a gifted teacher and speaker. He served as Mission President over the Canada Calgary Mission (1985-1988). He served his country in the United States Army Counter Intelligence Corps (1953-1955). He served in Rotary International

as President of the South Salt Lake Club (1982-1983), District Governor for Utah District 5420 (1996-1997), Foundation Chairman (1997- 1998) and District Advisory Committee (1997-2005), and is a Paul Harris Fellow and was at the time of his death a member in good standing of the St. George Club. He extended his service as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Deseret Foundation, IHC Health Plans, Dixie Regional Medical Center Foundation, and as a Member of the National Advisory Council of Dixie State College.

He brought great enthusiasm to his career, and "Spaff" will be particularly remembered and respected for his organizational skills and work ethic by colleagues and dear friends at UARCO Business Forms, Galbraith & Green, Inc. and RJ Salisbury & Associates.

In every act of service, in every successful pursuit, and in every moment at home, Sterling relied upon his sweetheart of 59 years, Marilyn. They two were one in so many endeavors, each knowing the role and acting the part. When the Spafford's presided in Canada Calgary, the missionaries enjoyed their service and respected and revered Sterling, but they loved Marilyn! Many times, Sterling Spafford was the brand, but Marilyn created the ingredients. Together, they created family memories including trips to Moab, National Parks, Colter Bay and Laguna Beach. He loved to organize family trips and cruises. She went along and helped him make them great.

His testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ was strong. His knowledge and application of Church doctrine was evident in the way he lived. His teaching and example lead so many in his family and those touched by his ministry to follow the path of righteousness.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, children Susan (Dale) Buxton, Oakley, Utah, David (Susan) Spafford, Salt Lake City, Utah, son in law Hal Whitney, Parker, Colorado, daughter in law Kathy Spafford, Draper, Utah, sister Marianne (Bud) McDonald, Bountiful, Utah, and brother Lynn (Marilyn) Spafford, St. George, Utah. He counted in his posterity 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by children Michael Sterling Spafford, Joni Spafford Whitney and Paul Weldon Spafford, parents, and brother, Stan Spafford.

September 2011 Reunion in St. George, Utah

A Galbraith and Green reunion was held in St. George, Utah on September 22 and 23, 2011. Here are some pictures taken that evening. Dinner, great conversation and a walk down memory lane made it memorable for those in attendance. Several enjoyed extra-curricular activities at Tuachan Amphitheater and Zion's Canyon, along with a few holes of golf for others. Thanks to Dave Olson who was the mastermind behind it and to all those who assisted him. If you would like to order any of these pictures for your own printing, let me know and I can send you the link to Costco or email a specific picture to you. If you took pictures worth sharing, let me know and I'll add them to this blog.
